Townsville City Council received an application from Gleeson Properties Pty Ltd to remove a local heritage place known as ‘The Criterion Hotel’ , located at 10 The Strand, from Schedule 7 - Places of cultural heritage value in the Townsville City Plan. Listing of a property in Schedule 7 serves to retain, conserve and protect Townsville’s cultural heritage.

The application to remove The Criterion Hotel from Schedule 7 would mean that the development controls under the Townsville City Plan for cultural heritage would no longer apply, and would allow the demolition, removal and alteration without a development permit from council.

Council sought community feedback and submissions prior to making a decision from 2 September to 14 October 2016. Submissions could be made both in written form, or by taking the online survey.

388 submissions were made during the consultation period, with 57% of respondents in favour of retaining the hotel on the local heritage register.

As a result Townsville City Council has voted against a proposal to remove The Criterion Hotel from the local heritage register during the full council meeting held on 13 December 2016.

The full submission findings can be found in the document library.
